Instagram profile picture dimensions
Instagram displays profile pictures as a circle, but stores them as a square. Upload a square image of at least 320x320 pixels so it stays crisp across devices. Larger square sources (for example 1080x1080) give Instagram more detail to work with.
Because the visible area is a circle inscribed in that square, anything in the corners is cropped out. Keep your subject centered and leave breathing room around the edges.
Framing for the circular crop
Center your face or subject and avoid placing important elements near the corners. For personal accounts, a clear head-and-shoulders crop reads best at small sizes. For brands, a centered logo with margin works well.
High contrast between the subject and background helps your pfp stand out in feeds and comment threads, where it appears very small.
Quality matters more at small sizes
A blurry or noisy image looks even worse once Instagram compresses and shrinks it. Start with a sharp, well-lit photo. If your image is soft, enhance it first with the AI Photo Enhancer, and if it is too small, upscale it before uploading.
